Tonight I came up with a thought that I'm not saying I fully believe in, but thought it was interesting and wanted to put it out there and see what happened (although there's not much traffic on this site).
It's not a new theory -- it's been out there since the beginning, but things keep coming up that appear to keep backing it up.
So the theory is that the survivor's thoughts or desires materialize into existence. It's not really a theory that gets me very excited, but right now, it's the only theory that I see evidence pointing towards. All of the other theories I've heard, such as purgatory, don't have the common sense evidence that this other theory does.
My evidence is:
1. The polar bear (came into existence subconsciously by Walt or Michael)
2. Locke's legs (became reality...not quite sure whether it would be subconscious -- perhaps old habits kicked in and he simply moved his legs and voila!)
3. Jack's dad (either subconsciously or desired into existence)
4. Charlie's guitar. I loved that scene. I'm thinking that Locke had the inside knowledge that he's acquired since he got on the island-- what with his legs and seeing the creature -- to persuade Charlie into thinking that when he looked up, his guitar would be there. He did it in a way that made Charlie subconsciously desire his guitar okay and right there in front of him. I don't think I'm quite getting what I'm really thinking out in words, but maybe you're following.
These next "materializations" don't have as much substance as those others, but they're possibilities.
5. Claire's baby starting to move again.
6. The rain. Was Walt able to make it stop when Michael promised he'd look for Vincent -- the dog -- as soon as the rain stopped? Was Kate able to make it stop because she got over her fear and was focused on going after Jack?
7. The creature. This one probably has some holes, but there's so much to it that makes me wonder. Perhaps it first came into "existence" when the first survivors landed on the island. I'm sure they had fears of what could possibly be in that jungle and subconsciously willed it into being so it was already there when this group of survivors came along. However, there could be something more to it. Perhaps it doesn't have one specific look or way of acting, but is different for each survivor. There's a very interesting line in the first ep and I'm POSITIVE it's a hint to the answer of what this creature is. After they've encountered the creature and are standing around discussing it, you can hear in the background someone say something along the lines of "That noise...it sounded so familiar". Perhaps in her subconscious there was a noise she tailor-made for this creature -- perhaps each survivor heard the creature make a different noise, a noise that was familiar to them specifically. I haven't had time to fully think that one out -- can you tell? But another thought is, when Charlie, Jack, and Kate are in the cockpit with the pilot, they hear it outside because it is there, but it actually acted out the attack on the pilot because the survivors had that fear that that was going to happen. I mean, come on, you stick your head outside where the "monster" is -- of course you'll have that thought that it's gonna get ya! Ah! New thought -- Locke's encounter...his thoughts about the creature would be fantastic, amazing thoughts because of what has happened to him since landing in this place. His thoughts are focused on discovery and excitement, not fear and doubt. So his introduction to the creature was amazing, mind-boggling, and eye-opening, not a scare-the-****-out-me experience.
Again, I don't fully believe in this theory, but it's fun to be creative and see how far I can go with it.
