First, the polar bear in the comic and then the polar bear on the island. Then in this episode during Walt and his fathers talk he mentions he will search for the dog once the rain stops, and right on cue it does. Is the island reacting to his emotions? Or maybe it is reacting to all of their emotions, but as a child it is more attune to his?

My thought is, yes, the kid has some powers; and, Locke knows this and is trying to harness it.

I don't know about this. Are the writers and producers of the show lying to us about the nature of the show? I have read that the show is set in our reality and that the show is not going to veer into the supernatural.

I have read that, too. But again, look at Alias. That is a show that is supposed to be based in "reality," yet clearly has supernatural/pseudo-scientific realms (Rimbaldi).

Thats true. I just hope it doesn't happen. I enjoy this show due to the great characters and the fact that I can relate to the action.

Does religious count as the supernatural? Its all supposed to be 'reality' driven, but we've been lied to by writers before.
It does seem a bit odd for that to be thrown out there like that even before the show airs.....
Either way the kid is either doing these th ings, or they are playing with our minds to make us think it.

I think it's a testament to the viewers, for the audience to be able to pick-up on this so quickly. I bet the writers thought they were being subtle...They underestimated fans!

I was thinking the same thing about the kid, in regards to the polar bear and rain. Its like he "predicted" the events in a way, or caused them. It could be coincidence, or have another meaning though. Hmmm...

During episode 1.1, I thought that "Lost" might be yet another retelling of Shakespeare's "Tempest". The incidents with the kid, who appears to be projecting his own thoughts and emotions onto the island, support my theory.

A good writer can draw upon past influences to guide them, but update it to fresh and new.
In my other favorite show, Hamlet and Plato and even neitzche crept in with startling regularity, but so subtle only hard core fans of both would probably catch it.
I lovedplaying "match the show with the philosopher/classic author" each week and I would be happy to do it again.
As for the boy and the tempest.....very interesting catch. Would love to see that pan out.

Just like BTVS has a LOT of Plato in it, I think Angel excelled in the Sarte. Wesley's character was a perfect example of existentialism, and I think every character dabbled in that at some point...
I see "Lost," integrating plenty of existentialism, which is nice, because it makes for unpredictable TV. It's much more realistic to write characters that react differently to each situation, as opposed to acting within "character type" no matter what happens. I don't see "Lost" faltering in this at all.

No No No, they are really living in the Matrix, the kid is Neo, and Locke is Morpheus.
See Locke knows the kid is "The One" but the kid doesn't, just like Morpheus knew Neo was the one.
How can you guys not see that? lol
