General Thoughts on this Episode...

Thought I would make a thread where everyone can sound off on there over all thoughts on this episode.

Like I said in another thread this episode was about showing that all characters are essentially starting over. Their past is forgotten, and now it is all about survival and new beginnings.

Locke...is he a nice guy? I mean in this episode he is helpful, kind and thoughtful. Is he trying to pull one over on the people on the island, starting early to gain 'followers' lest they split up in factions Lord of the Flies style? The music did get ominious at the end when zooming in on Locke. But with his Backgammon speach last episode, with the black and white pieces......is he showing that they will inevitably fall into that same mold? Dark vs Light? And his secret, i think the kid was either lying or leaving the whole truth out.

Sawyer is a loose cannon for most of this episode, but he seems to unravel at the end. Maybe his way of coping was to act out.

I like how both Sawyer and Jack had to face the fact that their realities have altered. Sawyer: Yes, it is survival, but it is survival as a team so he has to learn to work with people and therefore try to demonstrate compassion. Jack: He has to see the larger picture, sometimes ruthlessness is neccessary.

I still cant believe Sawyer shot him in the chest, why not the head? Chest wounds are some of the most painful ways to die. Might as well have shot him in the stomach.

Also is it just me or did anyone get a kind of relationship feel between Kate and the dying Bounty hunter/Marshal guy? Did she try to convince him of her innocence at one point, and then he get tender feelings for her? Then did she sneak away in the night much like she almost did with the Farmer, and that was a betrayal to him? Either way, he clearly had both a hatred for her and an admiration.

Does anyone forsee some Sun/Micheal shipping taking place later? Perhaps Sun has enough of her husbands nitpicking and things start happening....

And the boy....something is up with the boy.....

Over all I liked this episode, but it was definitly a set up episode. Giving us a feel of the characters, the island and foreshadowing for the rest of the season.

7 out of 10....not 10 because I think this episode was merely a steping stone for the rest of the season.

After the show last night, my wife was pretty pissed that we didn't find out about Kate's past. In fact, when Jack said, "I don't want to know," she screamed, "BUT I DO!!!"

They purposefully didn't tell us about Kate's past, because the theme of the show, now, is starting over. If we knew exactly what Kate had done (perhaps murder), we would always judge her on that and not what she does now on the island.

I have a strong feeling we'll never know what she did. Also, I appreciate the way the writers are not afraid to really mess with the characters' perceptions of who they are (ie, Sawyer close to tears, and Jack having to be a "murderer").

This was quite another strong outing. They need to slow it down a little, though, because it will give me another ulcer (the first from "24") if they keep up this pace.

I can't see Locke being a nice guy. I just get a real negative feeling flowing from his character. Almost like Stephen King's Flagg character from The Stand. I think he is trying to form some sort of an alliance. He knows some stuff that is going to happen and I think he is trying to get in a position that he can do something about it.

I loved the shot of Sayid throwing the fruit to Sawyer. A great way to settle their differences and point their relationship in a new direction. I think this show is going to totally screw with our perceptions of good and evil characters, maybe even avoiding that cliche all together. I could see this show mirroring the United States current split along social and political lines. Hopefully the Libbies and the Conservatives can get along.

Speaking of Sawyer, whats in his past that he can "put a man out of his misery" like that? That can't be an easy thing to do.

Well Sawyer messed it up, so I think its totaly out of character for him. But hes trying to pretend hes the hard ass of the group, but we see the crack in his armour at the end.

I bet he is the type that was always loped on in life, and now he sees this as his opportunity to be a cowboy.

I thought the episode was pretty good even though I thougt they spent too much time on Kate's past. It might've been better if we found out what was it that she did but since we didn't it seemed a little off.

Also, the show didn't seem to be as suspenseful as the others. With the others I had to cover my eyes because I was scared. LOL This one I didn't.

I would say it was a 7 out of 10. But, I do think they are starting to set us up for some very interesting things.

Doesn't Jack say something to Sawyer like "You punctured his lung, It'll take hours for him to die now."

Sawyer leaves the tent, Jack stays in the tent, and the the Marshal dude is dead a few minutes later.

Soo...who things that Jack took it upon himself to kill the Marshal dude? I mean, poor guy. He's a doctor, not cool with the idea of even denying the guy anti-biotics, even though he's gonna die. Then's he's basicly forced to kill him. Also, he probably almost had to have smotherd him or something....so now he has to kill the guy in a really up close and personal way.

Poor Jack.
