In the interview on aint-it-cool-news the writer mentioned the idea that while the survivors may be splitting into two groups (light and dark), that people may move back and forth. So I thought it would be interesting to look at how you would distinguish the sides now, before the different characters have really begun to make choices.
I would think the basic starting place would be that the light side would look for survival of the group as whole, possibly even to the extent of personal sacrifice for the greater good. The dark side would clearly look only for personal survival and have no concerns at all about another person’s death being necessary for their own needs to be met.
So far the most telling example of this was with the Korean man. He has prepared food for himself and his wife, but he cannot be sure it is safe to eat. So he must find someone to test it for him. Hurley wisely refuses to participate, so the Korean man feeds raw, untested shellfish to the pregnant woman. Clearly this is the most despicable act we have seen on the show yet. While I think his apparent inability to speak English will prevent him from being the leader of the dark faction, clearly he will be a major player.
But what about the rock star? I think his big test will come when the baby is born. On another board I read someone say that the mother is going to have a terrible time delivering that baby with no pain-killers. However, the rock star has a good supply of the most powerful pain-killer ever invented. By the time she goes into labor, his supply should be very short. Will he be prepared to offer to share? Will the others accept this offer if he makes it? While stepping up and saying, “give her some of my heroin to help her with the childbirth” would be a very altruistic thing for a junkie to do, what happens to him if they reject this offer.?
These are the things I have been thinking about this week.
